No matter who you wanted to win the election, things have been stressful this week. But it's clear the real winners in this election are cannabis and rational drug reform.

Every cannabis measure passed! New Jersey, Arizona and Montana switched from medical to adult-use while the conservative state of Mississippi overwhelmingly passed medical cannabis. South Dakota, in a nation's first, passed medical AND adult-use together! New Jersey’s move puts pressure on New York to legalize, which the governor wants to do in 2021. Cannabis is now legal for medical use in 35 states and adult use in 15 and D.C. One-third of the country is living in an adult-use jurisdiction!

Washington, D.C. made possession of all plant-based drugs the lowest police enforcement priority and Oregon committed to the country’s first psilocybin legal framework for monitored therapy. Oregonians made the most groundbreaking and controversial move, decriminalizing ALL drugs. That means those caught with heroin don't go to jail but rather pay a fine after a “health assessment” where they are offered anti-addiction resources. Portugal decriminalized drugs similarly in 2001 and as shown in our Cool Finds section, this saved money, reduced drug use and saved lives!

Oregon can serve as an experiment so that other more conservative states can see if blanket drug decriminalization helps or hurts the drug epidemic. Remember, 80% of all heroin addicts started with prescription drugs At the end of the day, I think we’re all just looking and hoping for solutions. I'm excited knowing that our industry is leading the way to a healthier future. If you are in or support the cannabis industry, pat yourself on the back. ☺
